Crucero Amazonas

DAY 1: IQUITOS – AMAZON RIVER – TANSHIYACU.

Upon arriving at the airport, our team will be there to welcome you to the city of Iquitos. You will be transferred by bus to the boarding port, where you will board the auxiliary boat that will take you to our home for the next eight days: the Amazon Cruise.

Once on board, we will settle you into your room. Then you will head to the third deck for the captain and crew’s welcome and a brief explanation of safety and evacuation protocols. We will tour the common areas of the Amazon Cruise and begin navigation from the Nanay River to the Amazon River towards Tamshiyacu.

As we navigate, we will talk about the variety of highly nutritious fruits that the Amazon offers, rich in protein, fiber, iron, vitamins, such as the Breadfruit Tree, camu camu, aguaje, macambo, aguaymanto, cocona, passion fruit, lúcuma, coffee, cocoa, etc.

We’ll talk about passion fruit, with its pleasant sweet and sour flavor. Well-known worldwide, it’s worth mentioning that it contains fiber, vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, essential for combating stress, insomnia, and preventing respiratory infections. To enjoy its flavor and aroma, we’ll offer refreshing passion fruit sours, with and without liquor.

Our Chef and his team will pamper your palate with an exquisite gastronomic experience, using ingredients that the Amazon pantry decides to offer us in season.

Exploration of Tamshiyacu

The Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Communal Reserve is a suitable place to observe flora and fauna in their natural habitat. Therefore, upon reaching our destination, we will go on an excursion to the Tamshiyacu creek, in search of birds, monkeys, sloths, caimans, fish, and dolphins. Be attentive not to miss the beauty of a sunset in the Amazon rainforest.

DAY 2: TAMSHIYACU – YARAPA RIVER.

The navigation continues along the Amazon River while breakfast is served buffet style. (We’ll depart around 8 am.)

Mid-morning, our bartender will be waiting for you on the third deck to offer fruit refreshments and cocktails inspired by the Amazon jungle.

Excursion to the Yarapa River

Upon reaching our destination, after lunch, we invite you to board the auxiliary boat to enter the calm black waters of the Yarapa River. Along the route, we will be accompanied by a variety of birds such as swallows, songbirds, piprites, black-necked falcons, as well as monkeys and sloths.

Breadfruit Tree

During our journey, you will get to know the Breadfruit Tree (Artocarpus altilis), known as “Pandisho”. Its fruits have a neutral flavor and are consumed by the riverine inhabitants of the Amazon, and the natives use the tree resin to heal wounds and tumors, applying it directly to the affected skin surface.

Encounter of Giants

As we progress with the navigation, in the afternoon, you will be able to appreciate a unique natural scenario: the confluence of two large rivers, the Ucayali and the Marañón, which merge and inject their flow into the giant Amazon. The sounds of the waters, the swallows, and the noisy parrots will show nature in its full splendor. And then you will realize that you are part of this exclusive and captivating spectacle.

DAY 3: YARAPA RIVER – PUERTO MIGUEL – NAUTA.

Getting to know the Amazon Victoria Regia Lily. After breakfast, we invite you to board the auxiliary boat to go to Puerto Miguel and then continue to a connector of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers where we can meet the Amazon Victoria Lily, a native water lily, which is the largest of the lilies that grow in the shallow waters of the tributaries of the Amazon River.

Camu Camu

Today we’ll talk about camu camu. A red fruit with high antioxidant power due to its high concentration of vitamin C, it helps mitigate the negative impact of stress and the action of free radicals in the body, prevents cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

Meeting a Prehistoric Bird

In the afternoon, we will take a guided tour to San José de Paranapuras where you will discover a variety of regional products from the Peruvian Amazon, and then walk through a primary forest where you can see huge trees and we can advance towards a lagoon to appreciate the Shansho, a prehistoric bird.

Later, we will visit Our Lady of Paranapuras, founded in 1652 by Father Figueroa near the “salinas de peña, an important condiment for consumption and for exchange between the missions and towns of the region”, an activity that continues to this day and is also used for the therapy of some pathologies.

DAY 4: NAUTA – NAUTA CAÑO.

Tour of the town of Nauta

This morning, after breakfast, we will take a tour of the town of Nauta to meet the riverside inhabitants. In the local market, you can learn about fish species and Amazonian fruits.

Legend has it that Nauta was established on April 30, 1830, by the Kukama chief Manuel Pacaya Irarica. Officially, it was founded in 1930. It is an important point for local communities because this is where they sell their crops and also because it connects them with Iquitos, the capital of the department.

Cocona

Today we’ll talk about cocona, a fruit that grows in the tropical areas of the Peruvian Amazon. It is a delicious citrus fruit, reddish-yellow in color. Its high content of vitamin C allows for easy iron absorption. Also, it contains carbohydrates, iron, calcium, carotene, and phosphorus.

Exploring Nauta Caño

We will board the auxiliary boat to take an excursion through Nauta Caño, part of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Nauta Caño is known as the forest of mirrors because incredible and beautiful sunsets and natural scenes are reflected in the black waters of the cochas and the flooded forest. We will have the opportunity to observe wildlife such as squirrel monkeys, toucans, macaws, iguanas, birds, dolphins, and caimans.

DAY 5: NAUTA CAÑO – YANAYACU PUCATE

Fundo Casual

After breakfast, we will take a walk-through Fundo Casual, a tropical forest managed by local residents, where we will see different species of local fauna. We often find tarantulas, rainbow boas, sloths, anacondas, and poison frogs. We will have the opportunity to purchase handicrafts made of wood and other materials.

Aguaje

Today we will talk about aguaje. This fruit contains phytoestrogens, chemical compounds that have an anti-cancer effect against breast, colon, and prostate tumors. It is one of the richest foods in vitamin A on the planet. Aguaje plants can store large amounts of carbon, making them key ecosystems for mitigating the effects of climate change.

Exploring Yanayacu

After lunch, we will take an excursion to Yanayacu, a blackwater river inside the Pacaya Samiria Natural Reserve. There we can see macaws, different species of monkeys such as squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys, pink and gray dolphins, paiches, and black and white caimans.

Exploring Pucate

Before nightfall, we will enter the Pucate River in search of caimans, nocturnal birds, anacondas, and to observe the sunset colors over the river. If we stay until dark, we will be able to hear the sounds of the jungle.

We will spend the night in Yanayacu Pucate.

DAY 6: YANAYACU PUCATE – LAS PALMAS.

Visit to Las Palmas

After breakfast, we will visit Las Palmas, a village surrounded by beauty and tropical splendor. We will enjoy biodiversity and impressive views. They will demonstrate how the blowgun, spear, and bow were used as hunting elements for their subsistence. Here we can also spot lizards and sloths.

Aguaymanto and lucuma

Today we won’t talk about aguaymanto and lucuma, products native to Peru that are produced on the coast and in the Andes.

Aguaymanto has a high content of vitamin C. Considered a superfood for its high concentration of antioxidants and other nutrients, aguaymanto helps heal wounds, improves the immune system, increases red blood cell production, perfect for delaying aging.

The lucuma tree grows in the Andean region, is rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, beta-carotene, and minerals, nutritional properties highly valued during the Inca Empire. The Incas considered it a symbol of fertility. Ceramics from 200 AD, with images of lucuma, buried in sacred tombs, demonstrate its importance to them.

Exploring Shiriyacu and Pahuashiro

We will invite you to board the auxiliary boat to take you to the black water stream called Shiriyacu to fish for piranhas. We will continue exploring a small tributary of the Marañón River, called Pahuashiro, to search for wildlife. In this beautiful setting, we can see birds and monkeys. It is an excellent landscape to photograph the sunset.

DAY 7: LAS PALMAS – TAHUAYO.

We will begin the return to Iquitos. It will be a long navigation during which we hope you relax and enjoy the journey.

For this, we will have an interesting activity on board. You cannot miss the tasting of macerated drinks and cocktails, prepared with inputs and fruits from the area. In addition, we will share pleasant moments while tasting the various varieties of the country’s emblematic drink, we will review its history and origin and then move on to participate in the preparation of the pisco sour.

Cooking class

Now it’s time to comment on the paiche, a giant fish and emblematic of the Amazon, rich in omega 3, 6, and 9. Overfishing put its existence at risk and also the balance in food webs by increasing the threat to other species that would become substitutes.

For this reason, a periodic ban has been established to ensure that adults can reproduce without the pressure of capture and that juvenile fish grow, contributing to the increase of the species. Their eggs are deposited in nests built by the males, who take care of the young fry.

Exploring Tahuayo and piranha fishing

This afternoon we will invite you to board the auxiliary boat to explore the Tahuayo River. As we navigate, we will observe a variety of swallows, tropical songbirds, piprites, black-necked falcons, and sloths. Upon arrival at our destination, you can try to fish for some of the fierce piranhas, as well as other species.

Tonight, after dinner, we will go up to the third deck to enjoy a memorable farewell cocktail. 

DAY 8: TAHUAYO – IQUITOS – AIRPORT.

To allow for some extra rest, we will have breakfast later than usual.

Our bartender awaits you on the third deck to serve fruit refreshments, wines, liquors, beer, cocktails, inspired by the Amazon jungle, as we approach the end of this experience.

We will check out and head to the tourist port for disembarkation, where the bus will be waiting to take you to the airport.

Our guide will be available to offer additional assistance if necessary, assisting you until you have boarded your return flight to Lima.
